Important relationships in your life

Can you identify the most important relationship in your life? This can be different for each individual and that’s absolutely okay.

For some people, it might be their relationship with God or the universe.

Maybe it’s your relationship with your Mum, or your partner, your pet, even yourself.

I don’t think there is a right or a wrong answer here. What I think is worth reflecting on is the quality of those relationships.

Certainly there’s some science that says if you’ve got five friends that you trust, you’re doing well in life.

And I definitely believe that. I also firmly believe that like attracts like.

Looking inward

If you’re not happy in your relationships, sometimes instead of looking outward, sometimes it’s worth also looking inwards.

How is your relationship with yourself? How do you talk to yourself? Do you catch yourself with negative thoughts coming in all the time?

Are you your best friend, or do you say things to yourself that you wouldn’t say to anyone else in the world?

What comes with that, might be our own internal communication or our ability to communicate with others.

Do things get lost in translation? Or do you feel like you and your partner are speaking a different language?

Some of us may find that we don’t so much connect through the words we speak. Maybe we connect more through actions or other things that we do for others.

Or do we connect through the heart? Connection and communication are both really important areas of building and sustaining lasting relationships.

Community Connection

I’m really blessed that within Koru, we have this beautiful community. You might have other communities in your life.

It might be your community at your gym, or it might be an online community, or maybe your church. It’s worth thinking about the kind of communities that we have in our lives and how we can cultivate that.

If we don’t feel like we have a sense of place of belonging amongst a community, that can be something worth investing in.

How can we cultivate more community or how can we engage with our community?

There’s some studies around this as well. People who live longest, well into older age, are engaged in their work or community.

3 C’s of relationships

So three things, we’ve got communication, connection, community. The three C’s of relationships.

But if in doubt, I would say, start with the connection, communication, in yourself before extending that out.

Or if those things are going well, what one thing can you do today to improve your sense of quality of your relationships?

Maybe not the number of relationships, but the quality and your connection with those that you care about.

With that have a great day.

Can you identify the most important relationship in your life? This can be different for each individual and that’s absolutely okay.

Now for some people, it might be their relationship with God or the universe.

Maybe it’s your relationship with your Mum, or your partner, your pet, even yourself.

I don’t think there is a right or a wrong answer here. What I think is worth reflecting on is the quality of those relationships.

Now, certainly there’s some science that says if you’ve got five friends that you trust, you’re doing well in life.

And I definitely believe that.

And I believe that too, that, you know, like attracts, like.

If you’re not happy in your relationships, sometimes instead of looking outward, sometimes it’s worth also looking inwards.

How is your relationship with yourself?

How do you talk to yourself?

Do you catch yourself with negative thoughts coming in all the time?

Or do we connect through the heart?

And that connection and communication are both really important areas of building and sustaining lasting relationships.

The other thing that I would say that comes into that is community.

And I’m really blessed that in, within Koru, we have this beautiful Koru community and you might have other communities in your life.

It might be your community at your gym, or it might be a community like an online community, or it might be your church, but it’s worth thinking about the kind of communities that we have in our lives and how we can cultivate that.

And if we don’t feel like we have a sense of place of belonging amongst a community, and that sometimes that can be worth investing in.

How can we cultivate more community or how can we engage with our community?

So certainly there’s some studies around this as well, and that people who live longest and not just like live a long time, but also live well into older age.

They are engaged in their work or community.

Yes, movement matters if you want to create a healthy, balanced life.

Who saw our Let’s Get Physical video that we posted the other day (on facebook)?

If you want a little bit of a laugh, you can check that out.

It’s so often when we talk about exercise, people have this vision, they’ve got to be lifting weights at the gym, or they’ve got to be going from Run.

They’re really sprinting and working as hard as they possibly can.

And look, these things I’m not going to deny it.

They’re good for your mental and your physical health and wellbeing, your cardiovascular system, the quality and the health of your Bones.

When we look at people who live for a long time, so live to over 100 years of age and they’re healthy and not on medications.

What we know is, is that people who move more, that doesn’t have to mean going to the gym (though it could).

People who move more during their day, live happier, healthier and longer lives.

And that’s what it’s all about.

So finding movement that you enjoy, now that could be dancing.

It could be gardening and taking care of these beautiful, lovely plants out in the garden.

The digging and the planting and getting your hands in the soil, that can be really hard work.

And so that can be a really fantastic physical workout if that’s what you’re into.

Maybe you’re into yoga and wonder if that can be good for your health.

Certainly you can develop fantastic flexibility as well as physical strength and some types of yoga are actually quite vigorous and get you to move really fast. Many people talk about it enhancing their body mind awareness and supporting their mental and emotional well-being too.

So something like a Ashtanga yoga, is quite physically demanding and quite aerobic.

It can make you get a bit of a puff, which probably isn’t what yoga is known for.

Lots of people do that sort of slower flow or holding posture types of yoga such as yin or hatha.

They’re certainly not as physically exertive.

But the point that I’m making is, is that if you want to be healthier, moving more in your day is a great way to do it.

Moving with consciousness.

So if you’re doing exercise or some type of physical activity, you’re going to perform it better.

If you are really engaged with what your body is doing at that particular time, you will likely be more effective and get better results.

So if you’re going for a walk, it’s good to really get into the walk and feel your body moving.

You may potentially find yourself moving a little bit faster. Alternatively you may experience a little bit more relaxation, turning your mind off.

That way, you’re going to get some of the physical benefits, but also some of those mental benefits as well.

So key things for movement include; enjoying moving, moving more and if you can track the volume, intensity and regularity of movement..

And, and the last one too, is to get different of movement during your day.

Get a variety of movement in your day

So having a good combination between moving fast, a bit of bendy, stretchy type things (flexibility),things that help to increase our strength, things that help us to be conscious of and make changes to our breathing can be really helpful.

And I feel like I’ve missed one that I wanted to talk about, whatever it is.

It doesn’t matter right now, the keys we want to move more, sit less.

Sometimes people have talked about sitting is the new smoking.

It’s really bad for our health.

Get up, get some movement, because it matters and have a great day.

According to Dr. Prue Eddie (Osteopath) there are 5 keys to healthy balance, or 5 key focus areas to pay attention to in your life in order to feel a sense of wholeness or healthy balance in your life.

We have broken this down into the following:

  1. Nutrition (more than food)

People naturally immediately think about the food they put in their mouth when we mention the word nutrition and we completely understand why.

However there is a little more to nutrition than meets the eye.

Nutrition not only includes the food itself, but it’s quality which can be affected by length of storage and handling, the quality of the environment in which it was grown, water, light, pollution and so much more.  If you would like to know, click here.

  2. Movement (more than exercise)

The quality, consistency, variation and quantity of movement all makes a difference in regards to our longevity.

There are many types of movement and one type has the ability to cross over and alter another.

Breathing, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, strength, agility and physical balance are all important.  Learn more here.

In addition, we have internal body movement which is very important to the bodies self repairing and functioning capacity and can be overlooked.

  3. Body Awareness (physical body and beyond)

This includes our ability to sense our own internal body movement and function (called interoception) including tuning into our physical and emotional self. Then we have proprioception (our ability to use localised sensors in our connective tissues to stabilise our body or joints locally and send that information to the brain) plus sensory integration.

This involves coordinating our body movement in space and includes spatial recognition.

  4. Mindset

You often hear people talk about a fixed or set mindset or a growth, otherwise known as an abundance mindset.

A fixed mindset is where our brain may decide it has made a decision about something and wants it to stay exactly the same.

A growth mindset is often described as being more open, flexible and adaptable to the world around us and promotes learning new things.

It was once thought this was a set process and couldn’t be changed, but we now know that we can learn to be more adaptable over time.

  5. Relationships

Many people will automatically deviate with the relationship they have with their partner or a family member.

But relationships start with the relationship with yourself and then extend out from there.  Building and maintaining relationships involves communication, connection and community.

Facilitating and expanding our awareness of these 5 key areas allows us to enhance our sense of self and provide an equilibrium to our lives.

A transcript of the video can be found below.

So often we hear about people needing more balance in their life.

What does that actually mean?

What does it entail?

So, what do you need to do?

There’s so many questions around that or what it might mean for one person or what might constitute balance might be different to another.

But certainly like work life balance, that’s sort of a funny one. People, think they have their work or they have their life.

And I think so often, you know, that these things, in health, when we’re working in health, they come together, and then if you’re enjoying what you do, like they say, it’s not really work, is it?

But now let’s think about balance in regards to your health and well-being.

What does that actually constitute?

What does it mean?

How can you support yourself to have better health and a more fulfilling life?

So, one thing that I believe is that you can really break it down into five key main areas, which obviously then you can break those down into further areas as well.

Those five are the following.

Nutrition

So if you’re not eating well or as well as you could be, certainly they’re might be something that you can work through and it can improve on there.

Then there is……

Movement

If we don’t move, we can’t live.

Movement, I truly believe it’s a fundamental foundational principle of life.

Anything that basically that lives, it moves.

Then we have talk about…..

Mindset

You know, what kind of mindset are you?

Cup half empty or cup half full kind of person?

So what we talk about often is worth or abundance mindset.

Well, more like a fixed sort of mindset.

Maybe you find it a little bit, hard to make change, or be adaptable, for example.

So, and certainly people think that this is sort of static, but in actual fact, these things you can train yourself to being more life flexible or open.

Body awareness

Now we can break this down into three main areas like what’s body awareness.

And how is that relevant to me?

Is it just how I feel to a certain extent, yes.

Your physical as well as emotional sense of health and well-being and your inner self.

And then if we kind of translate that to the external world is relationships, communication and connection.

So I kind of put that all under……

Relationships

And certainly, partly we have the relationships with ourselves and then the relationship that we have with others.

So if you have any questions about that, feel free to get in touch and let me know, you can always pop a question below about the 5 keys to healthy balance and we’ll get back to you.
