The Perrin Technique

The Perrin Technique is a manual assessment approach developed by osteopath Dr Raymond Perrin to explore patterns of mechanical, autonomic, and lymphatic strain that may relate to chronic fatigue–related conditions. Dr Prue Eddie is a licensed Level 2 Perrin Technique practitioner, trained through the first Perrin Technique course ever run in Melbourne. My role is to provide a detailed, evidence-informed evaluation and to help you understand the structural factors contributing to your presentation.

Who commonly seeks a Perrin Technique assessment?

People attending for a Perrin Technique consultation often experience persistent, complex fatigue and multisystem symptoms, including:

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome / Myalgic

Encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME)

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Post-viral fatigue, including symptoms following viral illness or other infections

The assessment does not diagnose, cure, or claim to treat any specific disease. Rather, it aims to identify patterns of tension, congestion, and dysfunction that may be relevant to your overall health picture.

Your first consultation

Your initial session is history taking and assessment only.

This includes:

  • A comprehensive clinical history
  • Examination of posture, spinal mechanics, and breathing patterns
  • Palpation of key lymphatic regions, the thoracic inlet, diaphragm, abdomen, head and neck
  • Assessment of autonomic responses, including areas of heightened sensitivity or congestion
  • Specific Perrin Technique tests relating to the lymphatic and neuro-mechanical model
  • Discussion of findings and whether this approach may be suitable for you

Important information about the assessment

  • Items of clothing will need to be removed for accurate assessment of the spine, chest, abdomen, and lymphatic pathways. Appropriate draping and privacy are always maintained.
  • A distinctive component of the assessment involves palpation of the breast tissue, including the nipple, as this region forms a key part of the Perrin Technique diagnostic framework. This is performed professionally, respectfully, and only with clear, informed consent.
  • You are warmly encouraged to bring a support person—such as a partner, parent or adult child—if this helps you feel more comfortable.
  • You may withdraw or modify consent at any time

Home care program

A structured home care routine is an essential component of the Perrin Technique. This may include gentle self-care practices, positioning strategies, pacing principles, and supportive lifestyle considerations. These will be explained clearly and provided in writing. Consistency with the home routine is often an important part of the overall process.

AHPRA-aligned care

All assessments and discussions are conducted within osteopathic scope of practice and in full alignment with AHPRA advertising and professional conduct guidelines. No therapeutic outcome is promised. Instead, the aim is to offer a thorough assessment and clear guidance so you can make informed decisions about your care.
