Body Awareness – A Fundamental Key to Healthy Balance
Now, I have a question for you.
Can you out think a bad feeling?
Sometimes people, “Oh, I don’t know.
Can I, maybe, my minds really powerful our minds are really powerful.
Now, if you go into that sensation of what that felt like now over time, obviously that’s something that you’ve learned to overcome, but how did it feel? Did you feel it emotionally, or did you feel it physically in your body, maybe you experienced chest pain or breathlessness or headaches or sleeplessness.
Theres so many different ways that our emotional feeling can play out into our physical life. So part of this relationship and being able to identify and feel into our body’s responses of these sensations in regards to a feeling is called interception.
Interoception also includes a multitude of different factors. So can you feel into your ability to be able to hear or feel your heart beat, for example.
Are you aware of your digestive movements?
How does it feel when you breathe? Do you notice your breathing or are you completely unaware of it all of the time, another way to interoception can play out.
And sometimes people might recognize that maybe they have some difficulty with this is that maybe you can’t quite differentiate when you’re hungry from when you’re thirsty.

Maybe you get hangry and then you realize that you’re actually hungry.
So maybe your mental state is being affected by low blood sugar, without you actually recognizing that sensation in your body that you’re actually hungry or maybe you’ve just ignored it for a bit too long.
So we have interoception and this relates into body awareness. And then we have other types of body awareness as well.
So we have physical balance.
So let’s say our ability to be able to stand on one foot and not fall over and this relates to a combination of what we call proprioception.
So this is our internal body senses, being able to pick up where our body is and being able to adjust physically to help hold ourselves up in the upright position in combination with what we could call sensory integration.
Which also relates to our body’s internal patterning, but relates to more coordination and where our body is in space over a period of time.
So part of why I wanted to bring this up was how do you think your body awareness is?
How do you relate where your body is in relationship to the world?
Now, another way that these can play out, is spatial awareness.

How well are you able to read a map and work out which direction you’re going?
Now, that also is included in sensory integration.
It’s your ability to be able to identify I’m here, kind of create a 3D map and be able to navigate where it is that we’re going to go.
So there’s all different ways that body awareness can play out in our lives.
If we have issues maybe with think about when you’re lost and you’re looking at a map and how frustrated you get.
That then swings back into our emotional feeling and then where do you feel that tension or stress rising in your physical body?
So you can see how we can create a little loop with how all these different three areas can play out in regards to our body awareness.
So I hope that was helpful. I hope that’s explained body awareness a little bit more for you, and if you have any questions, feel free to pop them below or send me an email and we will get back to you.
